Larkfleet Wins What House? Award
Below are the comments from What House?
The Croft is a joint venture scheme by Larkfleet Homes and Keystone Developments – a community of 75 properties and a mix of bungalows, apartments and villas.
It can certainly legitimately claim its community status – a crucial ingredient in retirement living, allowing residents to be as sociable or as private as they like. At the centre of the development is an Edwardian manor house, which now has a residents’ lounge, garden room and kitchen. The new build doffs its architectural cap to the manor house with gabled frontages, while old stone walls at the entrance to the site have been retained. Resident activities, when simply listed, can give off a patronising air, but are key drivers in the success of such communities. As well as the obligatory coffee mornings and wine tastings, The Croft hosts antique valuation days, art exhibitions and yoga classes. There is a flexibility and balance to the designs and elevational treatments of the properties, but it is the warmth of the development’s whole streetscape and use of enclosed spaces that strikes you most. There are obvious but thoughtful touches, such as raised beds in the gardens to make it easier for residents to tend the flowers and vegetables.
